The combination of hotels and technology is something I have always loved and when I was invited to the launch of Text it. Get it. at Aloft London Excel I jumped at the chance to check out how W XYZ Bar is incorporating emojis into their service. Not the poop one which is good, although it is my favourite.
I follow the Biscuiteers on Instagram and I don’t think there’s a single photo of theirs I haven’t liked in the last year, so when a set of emoji themed biscuits arrived at my door inviting me to the event which included an icing workshop with them I knew it was right up my street.
We spend our lives on our phones and I love how emojis can express exactly how you feel or say more than words can in certain situations, and it was only a matter of time before they crept into the world’s favourite pastime of going to the pub.
While the biscuit icing workshop with the Biscuiteers was such good fun and a chance for everyone to get creative…
… it was the emoji food and drink ordering that stole the show for me.
Here’s how it works. Sitting on every table in the bar is an emoji menu and a particular emoji face. On the menu there’s a selection of drinks available as well as food options and when you’ve decided what you’d like you simply WhatsApp or text the sequence of emojis indicating your selected items plus the face emoji on your table so the servers know where you are. Like this.
Then lo and behold your order arrives. I LOVE IT. I am obsessed with this. A word to the wise though, make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp because I didn’t (and still don’t) so I couldn’t order a Bellini as I didn’t have the champagne emoji. I could have just gone to order it at the bar but went for another cosmo instead. First world problems, I know.
If you’re staying at the hotel and get a bit carried away with the emoji fun the night before you can order a hangover kit via WhatsApp to be delivered to your room. Win.
Using emojis to order drinks obviously isn’t for every hotel but it works perfectly at Aloft Excel which is part of Starwood and considered a spin off of the W brand. It’s a fun and exciting twist to the usual way of ordering drinks and I just want to hang out there all the time and bring my friends for a big emoji cocktail party.
To cement it even further as a bar you need to go to, Metro recently included W XYZ Bar and the new emoji menu in a roundup of the world’s coolest bars alongside other heavy weights such as the Northern Lights Bar in Iceland and Buddha Bar in Marrakech.
If you’re a social media fiend or a lover of emojis and in the area definitely check out W XYZ Bar, and even if you’re not get there because it’s everything you want it to be and more.
