Donald Trump is a man of many faults, a lot of which you hear coming out of his mouth at presidential debates, but what you can’t fault him on is his hotels. Well, not Trump International Doonbeg in County Clare anyway because the second I arrived I fell in love and it has made me want to visit all of his properties. I was actually really surprised at Trump Doonbeg, I was surprised that it was so different to my perception of the man, so ladies and gentlemen, welcome to…
Trump vs Trump AKA Man vs Hotel
Man: brash, brazen and loud
Hotel: Trump Doonbeg on the west coast of Ireland in Co. Clare is a five star hotel along the Wild Atlantic Way (a 2,500km driving trail passing through nine counties and three provinces) and so unlike my perception of Donald Trump the man and what I thought the hotel would be. Think five star luxury but without all the bravado and trash talk. It’s tasteful, it’s subtle and there’s nothing showy about it.
Man: “You know, it doesn’t really matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” – Donald Trump on women in an interview with Esquire 1991
Hotel: Although a golf resort with a sprawling course on a coastal edge, Trump Doonbeg is as much for women as it is for men. Women naturally have the opportunity to play on the picturesque course too, however if golf doesn’t appeal there is so much more to do. Guests can trace their Irish ancestry with genealogy services or walk along the one and a half mile of coastline, and when all that gets too much treatments aplenty are available in the spa and hair/nail salon. Outdoor activities can also be arranged including horse riding, coastal bike rides, diving, rock climbing and bird watching.
Man: Donald Trump doesn’t drink alcohol
Hotel: Obviously as a hotel Trump Doonbeg sells alcohol; it has the medieval influenced Trump’s Bar and Restaurant with views overs the Atlantic, as well as the fine dining Ocean View Restaurant. But an added touch which I could not love more than I do is the Prosecco at breakfast. As part of the vast buffet you’ll find a bottle of Prosecco to help yourself to and is there anything that goes with Eggs Benedict better than a glass or two of fizz? Not in my books.
Hotel: Trump International Doonbeg is a five star hotel but without astronomical prices. I stayed there in early October last year and booked a Classic Links Room for 2 nights. We paid around £140 including VAT and breakfast per night and took advantage of an upgrade promotion they were running and were upgraded to a Links Suite. The Links Suites are located within the Links Cottages which are about a ten minute walk from the main hotel. The suites have a living area with a fireplace, a fully working kitchen, a massive bedroom with a to die for bed and a spacious marble bathroom.
I’m so curious to stay at other Trump properties to see if they follow the same understated luxury vibe Trump Doonbeg has going on or if they reflect more of the man we see in the media.
Despite all of the above praise, probably my absolute favourite thing about Trump Doonbeg and the Trump Hotel Collection as a whole is the name of the loyalty program, aptly named Trump Card. Excellent.
