Hello from Rosewood London, where the trees grow tennis balls and the courtyard has been transformed into a shaded Wimbledon heaven.
In my quest to show how hotels are celebrating Wimbledon I dropped by Rosewood in Holborn to catch up on the tennis and sample one of their tennis tipples.
The courtyard has been split in half – half for cars and half for Wimbledon lovers, and on the Wimbledon lovers side guests can relax with a drink in hand surrounded by the four grand walls of Rosewood while watching live tennis under the shade of a parasol. And in this weather, what else would you rather do?
Despite the website saying no reservations taken in the evenings (“Bookings are available for lunch, but please note it is first come, first served in the evening”) we arrived at 6pm to 3 empty tables to be told they were reserved, so we took our place at a standing table. No biggie, the waiter brought over stools but either have rules or don’t.
Surrounded by tennis paraphernalia under London’s roasting summer sky it was only right we tried the Wimbledon inspired cocktails; Break Point and Golden Set. Containing cucumber infused Stolichnaya Elit Vodka, fresh cucumber juice, Lanson white label champagne, and fresh lime, Break Point is majorly refreshing and served in a TENNIS BALL.
It was strong, very strong. But that’s how I like my cocktails. The downside though is that it was also tiny because it was in a tennis ball. No one’s dream.
Golden Set, containing Beefeater London dry gin, Campari, fresh cranberry juice, and Lanson white label en magnum, is a tall cocktail and it’s tennis touch was a tennis racket ice cube.
Cocktails are £13 a pop so not cheap and to be honest I wasn’t blown away by them. There isn’t a huge Wimbledon connection other than one being served in a tennis ball and another with racket ice cubes when they could have played on Wimbledon specific traits such as Wimbledon being the only grass court Grand Slam or players having to wear white. That being said these cocktails and the outside area are a novelty and there’s nothing finer than being outside with a cocktail in hand watching the greats battle it out in our very own London.
Available until 12th July.
