There have been two occasions when I visited One Aldwych. Once for my hotel Christmas tree roundup in 2013 and again a few months later for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea, both of which were incredibly creative and unique. And at the beginning of 2015 I once again visited One Aldwych with high expectations for the hotel’s Film and Fizz night.
Each weekend the hotel shows a film in the private in-house screening room and welcomes guests with a glass of Lallier Grande Reserve Champagne and a box of popcorn before showing them to their seats. I saw A Most Wanted Man, a film about a Chechen Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg where he gets caught in the international war on terror. It was pretty intense but they also show new releases, classics, independent films and Hollywood blockbusters. You can check out the list of upcoming films here.
Following the film all the guests in the screening room were escorted to Axis, the hotel’s restaurant on the mezzanine level, for a three course dinner. As it was part of a package we ordered off a special set menu rather than an a la carte and I opted for the cauliflower veloute with truffle oil to start, followed by the confit of duck, and rounding off with the vanilla panna cotta. Phil also had the duck but started with ham hock terrine and finished with winter fruit crumble. All this came after popcorn and the most delicious, soft fresh bread so by the end of the evening I was pretty stuffed. The service was top notch and the wine perfect, I loved my dessert but thought that the starter and main were slightly bland and the choices were somewhat limited; the menu could have done with another meat option for mains to give a more varied choice.
Costing £49.50 per person it’s relatively cheap for all that’s included and when compared to Firmdale’s Film Club there’s a definite sense of exclusivity at One Aldwych, perhaps because of the smaller screening room and the much appreciated Champagne welcome.
I really enjoyed Film and Fizz and it’s a smart way to keep hotel guests inside the hotel spending money as well as bringing outside guests in to spend theirs. Although in-house screening rooms are becoming more popular not every hotel has one so take advantage of a hotel that does it really well and get yourself to One Aldwych for date night, family night, friend night or any night.
