Whenever I arrive at a hotel and check in technology is the first thing I look for. Whether it’s a 3D TV, an in room iPad, keyless doors or a gold dispensing ATM machine, hotel technology fascinates me and 100% enhances my stay. I’ve previously written two articles on hotel technology and many moons ago I wrote my BA dissertation on it so it’s safe to say anything in any way related to hotels and technology I am all for.
At the beginning of the month I attended the launch of #LightMEup at ME London; a social media Christmas light installation in the hotel’s atrium. With hotels that are really design led and modern traditional Christmas trees can sometimes look a bit out of place as they don’t complement the property or its decor. But what’s great about ME London is that management is well aware of this and knows the brand, and have created something completely unique, true to the property, and in line with the hi-tech world in which we live.
Designed by Blow Factory, the marble walls in the atrium are projected with a blue wintery scene and as guests tweet/Instagram using the #LightMEup hashtag their posts become part of the display in the form of falling snowflakes. By incorporating the use of social media into the installation the hotel is not only encouraging guests to get involved and be part of the decoration, but is also getting free online publicity. Such an excellent idea. How has this not been thought of before?
Although what I actually said was…
In addition to the social media Christmas tree we were also treated to champagne, canapés and hot chocolate mulled wine. I’ll repeat that. Hot. Chocolate. Mulled. Wine. It was SPECTACULAR. Think creamy melted chocolate with comforting Christmas smells and a hint of mulled wine sipped through a straw. Just perfect. I helped myself to a few of those beauties then set off on my way happy as Larry.
With social media being so popular I’m surprised more hotels haven’t embraced it in their Christmas decorations. #LightMEup runs daily after dark from 2nd – 31st December and is definitely worth a look and a tweet. And if you ask really nicely they might even make you a hot chocolate mulled wine. Christmas heaven in a glass.
