In many ways this hotel is fairly standard – clean rooms, a bar, restaurant, 2pm check in and friendly staff. But there was an artsy and boutique vibe to the property which made it feel much more than an average hotel. Maybe it was the life size cow in the lobby, or the terrace outside the bar, perhaps the epic bagel shop across the way, the overflowing mini bar, the hotel bikes at the front door, or the straight Scandinavian lines meets boho chic décor. Possibly a combination of everything and although it’s initially hard to pinpoint what exactly sets this hotel apart having stayed overnight I figured it out.
Our room faced the marina with floor to ceiling windows but despite there being a small balcony it wasn’t for standing on. The beds were piled high with pillows and the duvet was one that you could get so cosy and warm underneath that it felt like a cocoon of happiness and safety. If there hadn’t have been a city as fun and interesting as Amsterdam waiting for me I’d never have gotten out from underneath it.
The bathroom products were Room Mate’s own as opposed to known brands such as Penhaligon’s or Apivita which many hotels use. Room Mate having their own products and branding made things a little quirkier and I love the creative words on the packaging of the shower cap and soap.
Mini bars are mostly pretty overpriced and charge for items you don’t really like but take because a) you’re hungry or b) the pubs are shut and you have to make do with what’s on offer. But the mini bar in Room Mate Amsterdam was jammed full of goodies I actually wanted.
Along with the epic mini bar that this hotel has done so right, they’ve also figured out power sockets by the desk on the other side of the room are of no benefit to anyone. At Room Mate Aitana the power sockets are in the bed headboards which is such a great touch.
The hotel has a glass façade and sits upon a man-made island. Although outside the lines are straight, inside in bar is decked out with curved couches, tables and fittings, and gives the impression of being bigger than it is with full length glass walls looking out to the marina. It’s very open plan and spacious, nothing is squished in or out of place.
Sometimes it’s the little touches that count and make a difference, and Room Mate Aitana have those little touches down to a T. The jam packed mini bar, super comfy beds, chic decor, and the plug sockets in the headboards make a standard hotel something much greater and offers really basic things that many hotels don’t but should. Well done Room Mate Aitana, well done.
