I’ve become a fan of the city break in recent times and during a weekend trip to Amsterdam Laura and I ventured up to the 11th floor of the DoubleTree Amsterdam Centraal Station to round off a great weekend and take in the city with a cocktail in hand.
The Skylounge offers 360 degree views of the city skyline but unfortunately there were no available tables at the windows so we grabbed the one and only free table we could see over at the bar and launched straight into the cocktail menu.
The menu was full of drinks I’d never heard of before so instead of opting for my usual Cosmo I scanned the menu to find something else I’d no doubt love, and it came in the form of Charisma. This cocktail was an absolute beauty and so full of flavour. It was one of those dangerous drinks you could drink all day and night and never taste the alcohol. It was fantastic and had we not been dashing off to get the train I’d have quite enjoyed another few.
Laura had a Voodoo which came in one of those brilliant old money tumblers, the type you see businessmen drinking straight whiskey from in the movies. It was refreshing to see not only the cocktail being presented creatively but also the glass in which it came.
Along with the drinks we were offered a bag of popcorn from the popcorn machine on the bar which I thought was a great touch and a thoughtful alternative to the usual peanuts and Bombay mix. And much tastier too.
It was a slightly windy and grey weekend in Amsterdam and when we visited Skylounge the weather hadn’t improved, but we did take a quick trip outside to the terrace to check out the view. The terrace i’s kitted out with wooden furniture and parasols which made it look really clean and summery, and the cushions dotted about added an element of comfort. It was a shame the weather wasn’t great despite being July as it would have been an excellent finish to a great weekend away if we could have lounged outside enjoying the sun with these original cocktails in hand. Maybe next time.
Both cocktails were €12.50 and although not cheap and not having a window seat I would happily go back again and again. The cocktail menu was vast and if every offering is as drinkable and flavoursome as a Charisma I’ll book my flights right now.
