Luxury means different things to different people and it’s a word that is way overused when it comes to hotels. But simple, easy going, inspirational, exclusive and genuine luxury is what you get when you step inside Sandy Lane in St James, Barbados. I can confidently say that it is the only hotel I’ve visited so far where I feel the L word is wholeheartedly accurate and deserved.
Last year I spent a week on the island and visited Sandy Lane for afternoon tea. We had a table on the lower terrace of Bajan Blue restaurant looking out towards the beach which is scattered with the hotel’s famous pink sun loungers and even more famous guests. Everything is very calm and relaxed at Sandy Lane, and sitting eating perfect portions of butter cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries while looking at the ocean puts you in a very calm, relaxed and happy state.
The afternoon tea comprised of the usual suspects joined on the table by beautiful rose patterned china to complement the elegant offerings. Although there were no Bajan twists to the afternoon tea we enjoyed a traditional take on it in 35 degree heat under clear blue skies while the waves provided gentle background music to the surreal dining experience. All of these aspects coupled with a few Instagram photos and attentive service set the bar very high for all afternoon teas which were to follow.
There are four types of afternoon tea available at Sandy Lane – Royal, Classic, Light, and A La Carte. We went for the classic option.
I didn’t have the chance to have a look around much of the hotel but if the afternoon tea experience is anything to go by I can only imagine the L word applies to every conceivable inch of the property. The areas I did see are breathtaking and pristine, and luxury at its absolute finest. Even the gates and the fountain en route to the hotel scream success and beauty.
Next time you’re in Barbados or if you have plans to go, make sure to include Sandy Lane in your itinerary to experience an old school, genuine type of luxury. Whether it be for dinner, afternoon tea or an overnight stay you won’t leave feeling disappointed or underwhelmed from this premier Caribbean resort.
